"Shmear with Scherer" Features Three Guest Speakers
Shmear with Scherer (formerly Muffins with Mullin) had three guest speakers this month. Mrs. Hinshaw, 3rd grade teacher, and Mrs. Hamilton, from middle school Science started off the monthly meeting. Mrs. Hinshaw discussed "Writers Workshop", a writing program they use in class to build and encourage writing skills. A group of 3rd grade students were present to talk about their favorite things in class. They showed off their public speaking skills as they talked to the parent group about Writer's Workshop, flexible seating in class, the Comment Box and their enthusiasm for 3rd grade.
Mrs. Hamilton's passion for teaching Science was evident as she outlined the many uses for technology in middle school Science classes. Technology is engaging students in new and interesting ways. Among other projects, the 6th graders produced a movie trailer on habitats, 7th grade did an animation project on Mitosis and the 8th grade put together Green Screen presentations on the science of Yosemite. Everyday in Science class a student gives a 3-5 minute presentation on a subject of their choice. The students in 6th grade start with a PowerPoint presentation, and by 8th grade they are speaking with just one slide, much like a TED talk. Two eighth grade students, Lucy C. and Rana K. were on hand to give their perspective on Science class and the projects they have been working on.
Following their presentations was an interactive discussion led by Narges Zohoury Dillon, MA, LMFT, on student stress and anxiety. Ms. Dillon is Department Director for the Child and Adolescent Hotline and Prevention Program at StarVista, a nonprofit agency that provides early intervention, counseling, and mental health services in San Mateo County. Ms. Dillon was the second speaker in the new St. Raymond School Parent Education Series started last month. Mrs. Scherer concluded by answering questions and addressing concerns straight from the parent community.
