Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - Third Grade Visits Shoreway Environmental Center

Our Third Grade class boarded a school bus and headed to the Shoreway Environmental Center this week, where they saw firsthand how our trash and recyclables are separated, processed and transferred.  The state-of-the-art recycling and transfer station facility offers residents and businesses a conveniently located option for disposing of unwanted items.  The facility strives to take the materials they receive and recycle as much as possible.

The Third graders got a first hand look at exactly what becomes landfill and what can be created from recyclable materials.  They observed how materials discarded by our local community are transported, handled and separated.  The field trip wrapped up with the students building "Jitter Bugs", solar gadgets with spinning propellers.  The students learned a lot about the amount of work and planning that goes into disposing of our garbage and recyclables, and came away with a new appreciation for reducing, reusing and recycling.
