Outdoor Education Fosters Social, Spiritual and Academic Development in 6th Graders
St. Raymond School 6th graders recently spent five days at the Caritas Creek at Catholic Charities CYO Camp. This residential environmental education experience for students joins science curriculum with retreat style activities. One aspect of the program is the faith community-building experience of Caritas which emphasizes the individual's unique gifts and strengths.
The 6th grade class traveled to the CYO Retreat Center near Occidental, by bus. During the week the students participated in a number of hikes, including a night hike and an ocean hike. They were exposed to a series of themes, activities and lessons designed to promote learning, awareness, and character development. The Camp focuses on hands-on exploration and strives to build empathy and understanding for the natural world. A CYO Camp Site Director visited the class to prepare them for the week at CYO Camp and will do a follow-up visit to St. Raymond School to reinforce the experience and review the lessons the students learned.
