6th Grade Scientists Explore Alternative Energy Sources
Our Sixth Grade scientists have been studying fossil fuels and alternative energy sources. After learning about alternative energy options, the class broke into groups and each group chose an underdeveloped city in the world and came up with strategies to help this city with new sources of energy. The students researched the geology, weather, and natural resources of the area to determine what type of alternative energy would be the best fit. Alternative energy sources included solar, wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric. The students had to take into consideration cultural, social and environmental issues affecting the area they chose.
After extensive research, the students put together a power point presentation and a model of an energy plan for their city. They presented the plan to their classmates and parents who were quite impressed with the amount of thought the students had put into the project and the amount of expertise they showed when explaining the alternatives they were recommending. The project proved to be a valuable hands-on learning experience for the 6th graders.
