Guest Speaker Inspires Creativity and Freethinking
Our Fourth Grade had a very special guest visit their class last week. Mr. Gene Magallanes, Mrs. Hohendorf's uncle, is a retired engineer from Redmond, Washington. He has worked for many years in the aerospace industry, having worked on the space shuttle and Boeing 787. In addition, Mr. Magallanes was a recruiter for the Engineering Department at the University of Washington. Mr Magallanes led an active and interesting presentation on engineering ideas which was originally developed for the middle school grades in the Seattle School District.
The students were broken up into six groups. They were asked to use their imagination to come up with new ideas in three categories: the kitchen, home entertainment and home security. The students then shared their ideas with the class and voted on the idea that they thought was the most interesting, and was something that could possibly be put into use one day. Mr. Magallanes allowed the students to think outside the box and encouraged all their ideas no matter how far-fetched, stressing the need for engineers to be imaginative in order to continue to come up with new products. The students were extremely enthusiastic and interested in all the ideas that the various groups presented.
